Dysfunctional Postural Reflexes
Postural reflexes provide us with vestibular development, visual motor, and visual perception, posture upright against gravity, and auditory and visual processing.
Reflexes Taught:
Positive Support Reflex, Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex, Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex, Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex, Landau, Perez, Gallant. We also teach Fear Paralysis Reflex since it is usually the reflex pulling the others listed above out of alignment and function.
Dysfunctional Extremity Reflexes
The extremity reflexes are primitive reflexes that help us to engage in the world and provide us with the quick reactions we need to learn, stay safe, and live each day to the fullest.
Reflexes Taught:
Positive Support Reflex of each limb, Stepping, Grasp, Head Righting, Stagger, Babinski, and Palmomental. We also teach the Moro reflex since it is the beginning of each of the limb buds during development.
Dysfunctional Cranial Nerves
The 12 sets of cranial nerves provide innervation to the face, neck, and even abdomen. These nerves can be impinged and decrease function secondary to tissues and structures that compress the nerves. There are also many reflexes elicited in the cranial nerves.
Reflexes taught:
VOR, VOR Cancellation, pupil dilation, suck, swallow, chomp, rotary chew, pucker, tongue cupping, nosing, rooting. Other things taught: cranial suture mobilization, fascial release for the face, foramen point stimulation, vagus nerve reset… too many to name.
Reflexes in Function
The development sets up our entire pressure, vestibular, and visual systems. Then comes head righting, arms/leg ballistic movements, rolling, army crawling, sitting, transitions into and out of sitting, sitting, pull to stand, standing, falling, stagger, stepping, walking, running, gross motor play, sports, active lifestyle.
Diagnosis Includes:
Failure to thrive, developmental delay, language delay, chronic pain, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Concussion, Parkinsons, Generalized Weakness, Back Pain, Neck Pain, Visual Disturbances, Learning Disabilities, Dementia, etc…
